Sudden Drop in Positions

Hi Guys,

I have been working on improving this website's rankings. For one keyword the site was showing on the 2nd page of Google and for the other two it was on page 3. Now all of a sudden. The position from page 2 has dropped down to 7 and the other two the site is nowhere to be found. The only thing I did recently was submitted the website to about 7,8 directories. Out of those 5 or 6 have not even apporved my listing yet.

Any ideas what could have happened?

Thanks.

Hi faz,

Directory listings wouldn't normally harm your rankings... How did you come to that conclusion?

Hi faz,

There might be some ideas here

Thanks for your reply. So it seems like its those directory listings that are hurting me. Still does not make sense, the directories seemed fine and just a couple of links would do that..wow

hmm because the only other options are:

1- Some of the back links to your site have been devalued
Actually this one can be the reason too, don't think I've lost any but I guess some might have been devalued. I'm not thinking about this option because I don't have that many back links yet. How can there be such a drop in position.

2 - A competitor has gotten the edge on you
This cannot be the reason too.

3 - New algo changes that put more value on a certain factor or devalue another factor.

This one is a possiblity

4- Site structure disruption

Site structure is fine, nothing has changed.

5 - Penalization or banning

don't think so coz im still on the seventh page for one keyword.

God I was so happy with my results so far and here I am now really dont know what to do.

Hi Samir,

hmm the only thing I probably did on the site recently is that I changed the meta tags for the sub pages and submitted a new sitemap so that those pages get indexed. I did this good couple of weeks ago.My positions dropped just a couple of days ago...

That's all the "options" in the first post of that thread... where did you get the idea that directory links were to blame? (I'm not being deliberately dogmatic here, I just think you may have mis-read or misunderstood something in that thread).

The metatags won't be the culprit (they will neither help nor hurt).
When you say you "submitted a new sitemap so that those pages get indexed" do you mean that they weren't previously indexed?
If "yes":
1. Do you know why?
2. What content is on them? (ie: Is it possible that they contain content which is already indexed on other - previously indexed pages)? (The question might seem strange but - if it's a blog this is a common problem).

I very much doubt its the directory subs. If it is let me know wich ones and I will knock of a little competition It really is very unlikely.

Have you changed your title tags?

Have you ever purchased links?

Have any of the pages that link to you purchased links?

Loosing links or links being devalued would often be the cause!

well yes the thread does not say anything about directories but i was thinking probably me submitting to them somehow gave me a few bad backlinks. But now that you said that directory listing wont hurt my rankings, so guess it has to be something else.

What happened was that the site was redesigned and so the folder structure changed a bit. The new site has been live for about a month and all the positions were fine even after Google crawled the new design.

Yes there were already pages indexed in google that had the same content as new ones but I had created 301 redirects on all those, so that they are redirected to the new pages.

Hey Guys,

Sorry I was out for the weekend. Guess what? I woke up this morning, googled my keyword and my site is back on the second page. So really not sure what happened but its back!

Lewis! Answer to your question, no I have never purchased any links. Most of my links are coming from directories and social bookmarking sites.Site is just a year old, so finding it kinda hard to build links.

Get some quality back links and wait for few days, you will be back soon …. You will have got a boost in your ranking while now you have to GET quality back links to beat your competitors .....
